Right now, politics often feels out of reach for young people. 16 and 17-year-olds aren't typically seen as part of the political conversation because they’re not part of the voting demographic. This, understandably, can make them feel unsure or disconnected.

 

But that’s not because they aren’t capable. When the voting age is lowered, 16-year-olds will be recognised as part of the voter demographic. This will prompt media and politicians to engage with them directly and actually include them in political discussions.

 

Disenfranchising young people at an age when they’re capable of understanding political issues sends a message that their voices don’t matter. Instead of encouraging lifelong civic participation, it risks creating disengagement and disillusionment at the very point young people are beginning to engage with politics. This very likely contributes to New Zealand’s low voter turnout.
