Tēnā koutou,
I support lowering the voting age to 16.
Voting is a fundamental right, and as voices of the future they deserve to have their say. Rangatahi are currently forced to accept decisions made on areas like mental health, education, transport and more, yet they have no say in these decisions. They pay tax and yet have no say on how it is spent or how much they pay. Overseas, 16 and 17 year-olds have voted in greater numbers than 18-24 year-olds, and voting earlier means the habit becomes entrenched for life.
The review should recommend a voting age of 16 so the voices of rangatahi can be heard in our elections.
